How to merge PDF files on your phone (Android and iPhone)

2026-11-04

Colleges, banks and job portals usually want one PDF, but your documents are often spread across several files: a marksheet from one place, an ID proof from another, a form you filled in yesterday. You don't need a computer or an app to combine them. A phone browser is enough.

This guide uses our free Merge PDF tool. It works the same in Chrome on Android and in Safari on iPhone.

Before you start: find your PDFs

Merging is quick. Finding the files is usually the slow part, so check where they are first.

  • Android: files you download from a website or email are normally in the Downloads folder. Open the Files app (often called Files by Google) and tap Downloads.
  • iPhone: open the Files app and look in Downloads (under iCloud Drive or On My iPhone).
  • WhatsApp: a PDF someone sent you lives inside WhatsApp. Open it, tap the share button and save it to your Files app or Downloads, so the browser can see it.

If any of your documents are photos rather than PDFs, turn them into a PDF first with JPG to PDF, or take the pictures directly with Scan to PDF.

Merge your PDFs step by step

  1. Open Merge PDF in your phone's browser.
  2. Tap Select PDF files. On Android, long-press one file and then tap the others to pick several at once. On iPhone, tap Select at the top, tick the files and tap Open.
  3. Each file appears as a picture of its first page, with a number showing its place and a note of how many pages it has.
  4. To change the order, hold a file for a moment, then drag it to its new place. The other files slide out of the way. A quick swipe still scrolls the page, so you won't move a file by accident.
  5. If the order should simply follow the file names, tap Sort A to Z.
  6. Use the round turn button on a file if it is sideways, and the ✕ button to take a file out. Tap Add more PDFs if you forgot one.
  7. Check the status line. It tells you how many pages the new PDF will have, which is a good final check that nothing is missing.
  8. Tap Merge PDF. When it is done, tap the big Download PDF button.

Where the merged file is saved

  • Android: Chrome shows a download message at the bottom of the screen. Tap Open, or find the file later in the Files app under Downloads. The file is called merged.pdf.
  • iPhone: Safari shows a download arrow next to the address bar. Tap it to see the file, or open the Files app and look in Downloads.

Rename the file before you upload it. A name like Priya-Sharma-documents.pdf is much easier for the person receiving it than merged.pdf.

Fixing common problems

A file turns red

A red card that says Password protected. Unlock it first. means the PDF is locked. Bank statements, e-Aadhaar and some salary slips are locked this way. Open the file with Unlock PDF, type its password and save an unlocked copy, then merge that copy. Only do this for your own documents. Our guides on bank statement passwords and Aadhaar front and back explain where these passwords come from.

The merged file is too big to upload

Many forms only accept files up to a few hundred KB. After merging, the Download screen shows Continue with your PDF. Tap Compress PDF there and the merged file opens in the compressor straight away, without choosing it again. See how to compress a PDF to under 100 KB for more tips.

A page is sideways or upside down

Tap the turn button on that file before merging. If only one page inside a file is wrong, merge first and then fix that page with Rotate PDF, where you can tap any single page to turn it.

The order is wrong after merging

Tap Back on the Download screen. Your files are still there in the same order, so you can drag one into place and tap Merge PDF again.

The file picker shows nothing

Some phones hide files that were saved inside another app. Save the PDF to Downloads or the Files app first, then try again.

Is it safe to merge personal documents?

Merge PDF works inside your browser. Your files are not uploaded to our server, which is why merging is quick even on a slow connection. You can check this on every tool page: the line under the tool says whether your files stay on your device.

Even so, treat ID documents with care. Delete extra copies from your Downloads folder when you are done, and avoid sending ID proofs in public groups.

Quick checklist

  • All your documents are PDFs (photos converted with JPG to PDF).
  • Password-protected files are unlocked.
  • Files are in the right order and nothing is sideways.
  • The final size is within the form's limit.
  • The file has a clear name.

That's all there is to it. Once you have done it once, merging takes less than a minute.
