How to rotate PDF pages permanently (and fix sideways scans)
2026-11-04
You open a scanned document and half the pages are lying on their side. You rotate them in your PDF viewer, close the file, open it again, and they are sideways again. That is because most viewers only rotate the view, not the file.
To fix it for everyone who opens the PDF, the rotation has to be saved inside the file. Rotate PDF does exactly that.
Rotate pages step by step
- Open Rotate PDF.
- Select your PDF. Every page appears as a small picture, so you can see at a glance which ones are wrong.
- Tap a page to turn it 90° to the right. Tap again to keep turning it: right, upside down, left, and back to normal.
- On a computer, right-click a page (or select it and press the left arrow key) to turn it to the left instead.
- Each turned page shows a small label such as 90° right or 180°, and its picture turns too, so you can see the result before saving.
- To turn every page the same way, use Turn every page: Left / Right above the pages. Reset puts all pages back as they were.
- The button shows how many pages will change, for example Rotate 3 pages. Click it and download your fixed PDF.
Every page keeps its own turn, so you can turn one page right and another upside down in the same go.
Why pages end up sideways
- Scanning in a feeder. Pages fed in the wrong way come out upside down.
- Landscape pages. A wide table or chart is often printed sideways in a portrait report. Scanned, it lies on its side.
- Phone photos. A phone stores which way it was held as extra information in the photo. Some programs ignore it, so a picture that looks fine on the phone appears sideways elsewhere.
- Mixed documents. Merging files from different sources mixes portrait and landscape pages.
Landscape pages: leave them or turn them?
Not every wide page is a mistake. If a table is meant to be read in landscape, a PDF viewer shows it correctly when the page itself is landscape. Only turn pages whose text runs sideways or upside down. A quick test: if you would have to tilt your head to read it, turn it.
Rotating while merging
If you are combining several files and one whole file is sideways, you don't need a separate step. In Merge PDF, each file has a turn button that rotates all its pages before merging. See how to merge PDF files on your phone.
Rotate, crop or organise?
- Rotate changes which way a page faces.
- Crop PDF trims the edges, for example the table top around a phone scan.
- Organize PDF changes the order of pages.
A messy scan often needs all three. Rotate first, so cropping and ordering are easier to judge.
Does rotating reduce quality?
No. Rotation only changes a setting on each page that tells viewers which way to show it. The text, pictures and file size stay the same, and text you could select before is still selectable.
Is it private?
Rotate PDF works entirely in your browser. Your file is never uploaded, so it is quick even with a large document and safe for personal papers. After downloading, the Download screen lets you continue straight to tools like Compress PDF or Add page numbers with the rotated file.
Quick checklist
- Look through every page picture, not just the first few.
- Turn only pages whose text is sideways or upside down.
- Check the label on each turned page.
- Download, open the file again, and confirm it opens the right way up.
