How to turn photos of documents into one PDF
2026-11-04
Most of us don't own a scanner any more. When a form asks for a PDF of your documents, the quickest way is to take photos with your phone and combine them into one PDF. Done well, the result looks almost like a real scan.
This guide shows how to do it with JPG to PDF and Scan to PDF, both free and both working inside your browser.
Step 1: take good photos
A few seconds of care here saves a lot of trouble later.
- Use daylight or a bright room. Avoid the flash, which makes a shiny spot in the middle of the page.
- Lay the paper flat on a dark, plain surface, so the edges of the page are easy to see.
- Hold the phone straight above the page, not at an angle. A tilted photo makes the page look like a trapezium.
- Fill the frame with the page, but leave a little space around the edges.
- Watch for your shadow. Stand so the light comes from the side.
- Check the photo is sharp before moving on. Zoom in on the smallest text.
Step 2: combine the photos into one PDF
- Open JPG to PDF.
- Click Select images and choose all the photos. JPG, PNG and WEBP images all work.
- Put them in order with the ↑ and ↓ arrows. The first photo becomes page 1.
- Choose a Page size:
- Same as image keeps each page the size of the photo and gives the smallest file.
- A4 or US Letter makes every page a standard paper size, which is best if the PDF will be printed.
- Choose a Margin: none, small or large white space around each photo.
- Choose a Look:
- Original photo keeps the colours as they are. Use it for photos and coloured certificates.
- Clean document (whiter paper, sharper text) removes the grey cast of indoor light. Best for most paper documents.
- Black & white document gives the crispest text and the smallest file. Great for typed or handwritten notes.
- Click Convert to PDF and download.
Prefer to use the camera directly?
Scan to PDF opens your phone camera from the page, so you can take the photos one after another and turn them into a PDF in one go. It has the same page size, margin and look options.
Step 3: check and finish the PDF
Open the new PDF and look through every page.
- Wrong order? Go back with the Back button on the Download screen, fix the order and convert again.
- A page is sideways? Use Rotate PDF and tap that page to turn it.
- Too big for the form? On the Download screen, tap Compress PDF under Continue with your PDF. See how to compress to 200 KB, 500 KB or 1 MB.
- Assignment or report? Add page numbers with Add page numbers.
- Want to search the text later? Run the PDF through OCR PDF. It reads English, Tamil and Hindi.
Common uses
- College and job applications: marksheets, certificates and ID proof in one file.
- Expense claims: all the bills from a trip in one PDF.
- Homework and assignments: handwritten pages submitted as a single file.
- Home records: rent agreements, receipts and warranty cards, stored where you can find them.
Always upload genuine copies of your own documents. A PDF made from clear, honest photos is accepted far more easily than one that looks edited.
Is it private?
Yes. JPG to PDF and Scan to PDF run entirely in your browser. Your photos are never uploaded to our server, which is important for ID proofs and financial papers. When you are done, delete the extra photos from your gallery if you don't need them, especially on a shared phone.
