How to add page numbers to a project report or thesis PDF

2026-10-27

Your project report is ready, merged and converted to PDF, and then you notice the pages aren't numbered. You don't need to go back to Word. You can number the finished PDF.

Steps

  1. Open Add page numbers.
  2. Select your PDF.
  3. Choose the position. Bottom centre is the most common for reports.
  4. Choose the format: 1, Page 1, or 1 of 10.
  5. Click Add page numbers and download.

How to skip the cover and front pages

Most reports don't number the cover page, and many start numbering after the certificate and acknowledgement pages. Here's a simple way:

  1. Use Split PDF to separate the front pages (for example 1-4) from the main content (5-).
  2. Add page numbers to the main content file, starting from 1.
  3. Use Merge PDF to join the front pages and the numbered content again.

If your college wants the cover counted but not shown, number the whole file starting from 0. The cover gets 0, and the next page starts at 1.

Final checks before submission

  • Check that the table of contents matches the new page numbers.
  • Make sure numbers don't overlap footers or page borders. Try a different position if they do.
  • If your college has a file size limit for uploads, run Compress PDF last.
